SALT LAKE CITY — Governor Spencer J. Cox and First Lady Abby Cox kicked off Utah's first statewide Utah Reads Read-a-Thon on October 2. From 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., more than 275,000 students and adults across schools, libraries, workplaces and community organizations were expected to pick up books and read together.

The governor welcomed participants statewide via livestream, while the first lady read with students gathered in the Capitol rotunda. Earlier that morning, the couple visited Guadalupe School in Salt Lake City to read with students and help them select books at a book fair. Each attending student received a free book donated by Marissa's Books.

The event is part of the Coxes' Utah Reads initiative to build a statewide reading culture. "Reading has the power to enrich lives at every age," First Lady Abby Cox said. The state encourages businesses, schools, libraries and families to set aside a shared hour of reading each year.
