Virginia Awards $22.7 Million in Community Development Block Grants to 17 Projects

RICHMOND — Governor Abigail Spanberger announced on October 6 $22.7 million in Community Development Block Grants (CDBG) funding 17 community projects across Virginia, covering new or rehabilitated housing, downtown revitalizations and infrastructure upgrades. Together with $9.7 million in local leveraged investments, the projects will benefit communities statewide.
Administered by the Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD), the awards draw on approximately $19 million in new funding from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development plus carryover funds. "Community development block grants remain one of our most effective tools to encourage durable growth in every region of the Commonwealth," Spanberger said.
The Secretary of Commerce and Trade said the funds will lower costs for businesses and families, improve infrastructure and grow local economies. Virginia's CDBG program has been administered by DHCD since 1982 as a major federal channel supporting local community development.
Funded projects span water and sewer upgrades, downtown revitalization, affordable housing and small-business support, chosen through a competitive application process that prioritizes the communities with the greatest need; the state expects the projects to create or retain hundreds of jobs.
