Wisconsin Releases 2025-26 Standardized Test Scores Oct. 1: Milwaukee Reading Proficiency Rises to 25.1%

MADISON — The Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (DPI) released Oct. 1 the standardized assessment results for the 2025-26 school year. Statewide, 48.4 percent of students in grades 3-11 were proficient or above in English language arts and 48.7 percent in math — a slight increase.
"Wisconsin students continue to make steady progress, and we should be proud of that progress," said State Superintendent Dr. Jill Underly. "At the same time, we know too many students are still not where they need to be."
Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS) reported early gains in the first year of its new literacy strategy: English proficiency for grades 3-8 rose 1.5 percentage points, from 23.6% to 25.1%, with improvements also in math, science and social studies. Superintendent Brenda Cassellius called it the first districtwide report card after adopting the "science of reading" curriculum: "This is the beginning of our work, not the end of it."
Challenges remain stark: about three-quarters of Milwaukee's third- through eighth-graders still score below grade level in reading; statewide, about 53% of third- through eighth-graders met standards in math and English, roughly flat versus the prior two years. Full data is available on DPI's WISEdash Public Portal.
