Trump Renews $5,000 Check Pledge, Tied to Republicans Holding Congress

Monday, October 5, 2026 · States · GSM News

President Donald Trump was scheduled to travel to Grand Island, Nebraska, on Monday to campaign ahead of the Nov. 3 midterms. In a recent Truth Social video, he renewed a pledge to send $5,000 to every adult U.S. citizen if Republicans keep control of both the House and Senate.

As of Oct. 5, Congress has not authorized any such payment program, and the White House has not identified a funding source, payment date, or application process. Paying roughly 240 million adults could cost about $1.2 trillion and would require new legislation, so this remains a campaign pledge rather than money on the way.

The administration has begun smaller payments, including one-time $90 checks for Medicare beneficiaries and $500 refunds for some federal marketplace enrollees. For families watching the proposal, the next step to track is whether a formal bill appears in Congress. (Sources: USA Today Network and Reuters reporting.)
