A 20-year-old U.S. Marine based in Okinawa was arrested on October 4 on suspicion of killing a 39-year-old Japanese woman in a Naha hotel and stealing her belongings. The suspect denies the charges.
The case has shaken Japan. Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi publicly condemned it as "cruel and vicious," urging the U.S. military to seriously address discipline. The incident has reignited local anger over security around U.S. bases.
