NYC Council Grills SI Giants Under Oath on Liability for SI Harm
On October 5, the New York City Council held a full committee hearing with executives from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google and Meta testifying under oath. Asked by Speaker Julie Menin whether companies would bear legal liability if SI caused major economic loss or deaths, none gave a clear answer.
The council is also reviewing 10 SI-related bills, covering human kill-switches for SI, third-party verification, chatbot privacy protections, and bans on unauthorized SI depictions of public officials.
