October Box Office Opens: 'Verity' Tops With $32.6M as Tom Cruise's 'Digger' Stumbles

Monday, October 5, 2026 · Film · GSM News

North America's first October weekend (October 2-4) had a clear winner: the psychological thriller Verity, starring Anne Hathaway and Dakota Johnson, opened at No. 1 with about $32.6 million domestically and $62.6 million worldwide. Adapted from Colleen Hoover's bestseller and made for a reported $40 million, it is the strongest launch for a Hoover adaptation since It Ends With Us in 2024.

The weekend's other major debut went the opposite way: Digger, starring Tom Cruise and directed by Alejandro G. Iñárritu, opened to roughly $8 million against a reported budget above $125 million — described by trade analysts as Cruise's softest opening in about 19 years. Holdovers stayed strong, with the new Resident Evil reaching roughly $125 million in North America and the epic The Odyssey at about $1.767 billion worldwide.

Critics were cool on Verity, but audiences showed up anyway — another sign that Hoover's readership is one of the most reliable box office bases in Hollywood today. (GSM summary based on Comscore estimates and trade box office roundups)
