October Declared 'Stop the Ant Month' in Hawai'i

Hawai'i's Department of Land and Natural Resources announced on October 6 that October is “Stop the Ant Month,” urging residents statewide to join the fight against invasive ants such as the little fire ant. According to the department's website, the little fire ant — native to South America — delivers painful stings and harms pets and crops, and has spread across multiple Hawaiian islands, seriously threatening local ecology and agriculture. During the month, islands will host free workshops and treatment demonstrations teaching residents to identify nests and use baits properly. Officials said invasive ants are extremely hard to eradicate once established, so early detection and prompt reporting are critical; the public is urged to call the reporting hotline upon spotting suspicious ant colonies.
