St. Louis Archdiocese Sues Over Religious Rights of ICE Detainees

Monday, October 5, 2026 · States · GSM News

The Archdiocese of St. Louis filed a federal lawsuit on October 5 accusing immigration authorities of violating detainees' religious rights. According to St. Louis Public Radio, the complaint alleges that people held by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) cannot properly attend Mass, confession and other religious observances in detention, and the archdiocese asks the court to order guaranteed access to religious services at detention facilities. Religious liberty claims have surfaced repeatedly in immigration detention litigation, but a direct suit by a Catholic archdiocese against a federal agency is unusual. ICE has not yet responded. The case is now before a federal court, and its outcome could affect religious-service policies at detention facilities nationwide.
