South Carolina Temporarily Closes Charleston County Shellfish Beds After Heavy Rain

The South Carolina Department of Environmental Services (SCDES) announced on October 5 the temporary closure of shellfish harvesting beds in parts of Charleston County after heavy rains compromised water quality. According to the department's website, storm runoff can carry pollutants into coastal waters, so commercial and recreational harvesting of oysters, clams and other shellfish is suspended until water tests pass. Charleston County is a key shellfish-producing area where many fishermen earn their living. The department reminded consumers to verify harvest area status when buying shellfish. Such temporary closures typically last from several days to two weeks depending on post-rain water quality recovery.
