Huawei, Qualcomm Strike Multi-Year Patent Deal; Qualcomm to Pay Huawei for First Time

On Oct. 5, Huawei and Qualcomm announced a multi-year, broad patent licensing agreement covering cross-licensing of patent portfolios across 5G, computing, super intelligence and networking. As part of the deal, Qualcomm will acquire some of Huawei's U.S. patents in computing, SI and networking — and pay Huawei patent fees for the first time, a fundamental reversal of the two companies' two-decade-plus payment relationship.
Both sides say the agreement follows fair, reasonable and non-discriminatory (FRAND) principles. The patent-asset acquisition remains subject to regulatory approvals.
