China Puts Hollow-Core Fiber Into Commercial Use, Cutting Latency Over 30%

Tuesday, October 6, 2026 · Technology · GSM News

China's next-generation communications technology, hollow-core fiber, has entered commercial use between intelligent computing centers in Zhongwei, Ningxia, cutting transmission latency and loss by more than 30%, CCTV News reported on Oct. 5.

Less than 0.4mm in diameter with 20 micro glass cylinders embedded inside, the fiber lets light signals travel through a near-vacuum air channel at 99.7% of the speed of light — far above the roughly 69.5% physical limit of conventional fiber. Engineers deployed it at scale for the first time this month between data centers 30km apart, solving ultra-high latency for long-distance computing power transmission.
