Trump Weighs Suspending Federal Gas Tax After Signing Dyed-Diesel Order

Tuesday, October 6, 2026 · White House · GSM News

President Trump said Tuesday he is considering suspending the federal gas tax to lower costs, after four states already did so ahead of the midterms. The federal tax — 18.4¢/gallon on gasoline, 24.4¢ on diesel — funds highways and bridges; suspension needs Congress, which isn't back until after the election.

On Monday Trump signed an executive order letting truckers buy tax-free "red dye" diesel through Dec. 31. The fuel, long restricted to off-road equipment, can now be used on highways — saving truckers over $100 per typical fill-up, the White House says.

Diesel averages $6.32/gallon (a record $6.53 on Sept. 22 vs $3.68 a year ago); gasoline is $4.37 vs $3.13 last year. The G7 agreed Friday to release 100M barrels from strategic reserves. (Via NY Post, WebProNews)
