Arkansas Releases Annual Report on Education Voucher Program's First Universal Year

Tuesday, October 6, 2026 · States · GSM News

Arkansas released the annual report for its education voucher program on October 9, covering the first year of universal eligibility, Wisevoter reported. The Education Freedom Account program, a centerpiece of Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders' education agenda, now allows all Arkansas families to use state funds for private school tuition, homeschooling, and other approved expenses.

According to the report, tens of thousands of students participated in the program's first universal year, with the state distributing hundreds of millions of dollars in education savings accounts. The average award covered a significant share of private school tuition, though families in higher-cost areas reported needing to supplement.

Supporters say the program gives parents control over their children's education and has spurred new private school openings. Critics argue it diverts money from public schools, noting that many recipients were already enrolled in private schools before becoming eligible.

The report comes as the program faces ongoing legal and political scrutiny. Lawmakers are expected to debate funding levels and accountability measures in the next session.
