Denver Committee Backs Property Acquisition for East Colfax Sidewalk Project

Tuesday, October 6, 2026 · City · GSM News

DENVER — Denver is a city in Denver County, Colorado (a consolidated city-county). A long-running gap in East Colfax Avenue's sidewalks moved one step closer to being filled on October 6, when Denver's Finance and Business Committee approved by consent a proposed measure (Council Bill 26-1430) authorizing the city to acquire property interests for Package 2 of the East Colfax CD8 Sidewalk Project. The work would add sidewalks where none exist and install accessible ramps.

According to the city's request form, the authorization would allow the acquisition of property interests through negotiated purchase or condemnation, along with authority to negotiate acquisition agreements and payments. The project sits in Council District 8, around intersections between East 13th Avenue and East Colfax Avenue, from North Quebec Street to North Willow Street. The form estimates nine temporary easements totaling about 2,000 square feet.

Council Bill 26-1430 is scheduled for consideration on the October 13 Mayor-Council agenda — a scheduled step, not a record of final City Council passage. East Colfax is one of Denver's principal east-west corridors, with dense neighborhoods and heavy bus ridership along its eastern stretch, yet sections lack continuous sidewalks. The phased sidewalk program is the city's effort to close those gaps and bring ramps up to accessibility standards.
