Georgia Power Data Breach Affects About 300,000 Customers

Tuesday, October 6, 2026 · States · GSM News

Georgia Power disclosed a data breach affecting about 300,000 customers, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported on October 6. The utility said the breach involved a third-party vendor's systems and may have exposed customer names, contact information, and account details.

According to the company, the incident was discovered during a routine security review, and the compromised vendor system has been secured. Georgia Power said there is no evidence that Social Security numbers or full payment card data were exposed, but it is notifying affected customers and offering free credit monitoring.

The breach is the latest in a string of cyber incidents targeting utilities and their vendors, raising questions about the security of the third-party software supply chain. State regulators said they are monitoring the company's response.

Consumer advocates urged Georgia Power customers to watch for phishing attempts using the stolen information and to take advantage of the free monitoring services.
