Sand and Lahn Spar Over Taxes and Education in First Iowa Governor Debate

Tuesday, October 6, 2026 · States · GSM News

Iowa's gubernatorial candidates held their first debate on October 6 at St. Ambrose University in Davenport, with Democrat Rob Sand and Republican Zach Lahn sparring over property taxes, education funding, and the state's economic direction. The race to succeed outgoing Governor Kim Reynolds is among the most watched in the Midwest.

Sand, the state auditor, accused the Republican-led legislature of hiking property taxes while cutting services, and pledged to make state government more transparent and accountable. Lahn, a businessman and former legislator, countered that Sand's proposals would grow government, promising tax relief and a friendlier climate for small businesses and farmers.

The two also clashed on education: Sand defended public school funding and criticized the state's education savings account program for draining resources, while Lahn said school choice empowers parents. On agriculture, both pledged support for Iowa farmers facing low commodity prices, differing on the role of state subsidies.

With early voting underway, both campaigns are focusing on the Des Moines suburbs and eastern Iowa swing counties. A second debate is planned later this month.
