UMBC Poll: Moore Leads Cox 51-24 in Maryland Governor's Race

Tuesday, October 6, 2026 · States · GSM News

A new UMBC poll released October 6 shows Maryland Governor Wes Moore leading Republican challenger Dan Cox 51% to 24%, with a large share of voters undecided, Center Maryland reported. The poll suggests Moore remains in a strong position as the midterm campaign enters its final month.

Moore, a Democrat seeking reelection, holds commanding leads among Black voters, suburban women, and younger voters, according to the poll's crosstabs. Cox, who lost to Moore in 2022, performs best among rural voters and self-identified conservatives but trails badly in the state's populous suburbs.

The poll also found Moore's job approval rating above water, with voters crediting his administration's work on education funding and economic development. Cox's campaign has attacked Moore on taxes and the cost of living.

With Maryland's heavy Democratic registration advantage, analysts say Cox faces an uphill battle. The poll's margin of error and the sizable undecided bloc leave some room for movement in the campaign's closing weeks.
