New York Declares Measles Disaster Emergency as Cases Climb to 124

Tuesday, October 6, 2026 · States · GSM News

New York Governor Kathy Hochul has declared a disaster emergency in response to a rapidly spreading measles outbreak, with case counts reaching 124 by the evening of October 6, up from 108 on October 3. According to the New York Times and the Associated Press, the emergency declaration gives the state additional authority to deploy public health resources and push vaccination.

The outbreak is concentrated in communities with low vaccination rates. Health officials say measles is one of the most contagious diseases known — a single case can infect nine out of ten unvaccinated close contacts — and the current cluster began with an imported case and spread quickly through unvaccinated households and schools.

The emergency order allows the state to streamline vaccine distribution, require reporting from health care providers, and direct local health departments to focus on contact tracing and isolation. Health Commissioner has urged all New Yorkers to check their vaccination status, stressing that two doses of the MMR vaccine are about 97% effective at preventing measles.

The outbreak is part of a broader national surge: neighboring Pennsylvania surpassed 1,000 cases, according to state health data. Public health experts blame the surge on declining childhood vaccination rates nationwide, driven by misinformation and pandemic-era disruptions.
