Eagles Tackle Lane Johnson Retires Midseason After 14 Years, Citing Mental Health and Family

Philadelphia is a city in Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania (a consolidated city-county). Philadelphia Eagles right tackle Lane Johnson announced his retirement on October 6, stepping away from the NFL in the middle of his 14th season. In his retirement statement, the 36-year-old said he had wanted to gut it out for one more year, but after reflection realized his personal and family priorities had changed and that he needed to focus on his mental health, adding that he owed it to his teammates, coaches, the organization and the fans to have his head and heart fully in the game.
Johnson, a six-time Pro Bowler who helped Philadelphia win two Super Bowls, is regarded as one of the finest offensive linemen in franchise history. The Eagles went 122-63-1 in games he started and just 18-30 when he did not play. He had said in August that 2026 would likely be his final season. Johnson started the Eagles' first three games this year before missing the Week 4 game against the Los Angeles Rams for personal reasons.
Rookie Markel Bell, a 6-foot-9, 346-pound third-round pick out of the University of Miami who started against the Rams, is in line to take over at right tackle as the 2-2 Eagles navigate a reshaped NFC East race.
