Brea: Family Says Relative Died of Suspected West Nile Complications, Urges Stronger Vector-Control Reporting

Tuesday, October 6, 2026 · City · GSM News

Brea is a city in Orange County, California. Brea resident Rebecca Nelson Salas told the city council on October 6 that her 47-year-old brother developed flu-like symptoms in early September that progressed to meningitis and encephalitis, and that he died after 11 days in intensive care, in a case suspected to be linked to West Nile virus. She urged stronger neighborhood mosquito treatment and vector control, along with real-time reporting of infections in humans, birds and mosquitoes.

City staff said vector control relies on county data and the city is working to improve access to that information.
