YouGov Poll: Talarico 50, Paxton 44 in Texas Senate Race; Hinojosa 48, Abbott 47 for Governor

Tuesday, October 6, 2026 · States · GSM News

A new YouGov poll released October 6 shows razor-thin margins in Texas' top races: in the U.S. Senate contest, Democrat James Talarico leads Republican Ken Paxton 50% to 44%, while in the governor's race, Democrat Gina Hinojosa edges Republican incumbent Greg Abbott 48% to 47%.

The results underscore how competitive Texas has become. Talarico, a state representative, has run a vigorous campaign focused on health care and public education, while Paxton, the state attorney general, is counting on the state's Republican base. The poll's margin of error means the Senate race remains a statistical toss-up.

In the governor's race, Hinojosa's narrow lead over Abbott — well within the margin of error — would have been unthinkable a decade ago. Abbott's campaign dismissed the poll, pointing to its own internal surveys showing the governor ahead.

Both parties are pouring money into Texas, with the Senate race drawing national attention and outside spending. Early voting begins later this month.
