Seattle Resident Arrested Oct. 6 Over Alleged Role in Deadly Canada School Shooting

Federal authorities in Washington state arrested 30-year-old Seattle resident James Cody Bryant on October 6 in connection with a school shooting in Canada earlier this year that left six people dead and several others injured, USA Today reported. Bryant faces charges of conspiracy to kill people in a foreign country for his alleged role in the February 10 shooting at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School in British Columbia.
According to the Department of Justice, Bryant was in frequent communication with the alleged shooter, Jesse Van Rootselaar, in the six months leading up to the attack. The criminal complaint details how Bryant allegedly encouraged and aided the plan — offering tactical advice on carrying out the killing, sending money for a lighter to be used to ignite explosives, advising on how to delete online messages, and even offering to broadcast the attack.
'The Tumbler Ridge Secondary School shooting was a horrific tragedy for that small community and for all of Canada,' Acting U.S. Attorney Neil Floyd said. 'It is even more profoundly disturbing to learn that a resident of Western Washington had a role in the attack and took steps — providing counsel, technical advice, and money to the shooter.'
The shooting took place at about 1:20 p.m. local time on February 10. Van Rootselaar killed two people at home before driving to the school, where five children ages 12 and 13 and an educational assistant were fatally shot. Van Rootselaar later exchanged gunfire with police and died by suicide, officials said. FBI Seattle special agent in charge W. Mike Herrington said the shooter was depending on Bryant to amplify a livestream of the attack.
Bryant was taken into custody on October 6 and faces a lengthy federal prison sentence if convicted.
