Black Hills Signs Deal to Power Google's Planned $1.8 Billion Cheyenne Data Center

Tuesday, October 6, 2026 · States · GSM News

Black Hills Corp. announced on October 6 that it has signed definitive agreements to power Google's planned data center in Cheyenne, Wyoming, a $1.8 billion investment that would draw up to 2.7 gigawatts of electricity, GlobeNewswire reported. The deal is one of the largest utility-data center agreements announced this year.

Under the agreements, Black Hills' Wyoming electric utility will supply power to the Google facility, with new generation and transmission infrastructure to be built to meet the massive demand. The company said the project will be structured to protect existing customers from bearing the data center's costs.

Google's Cheyenne data center is part of the tech giant's multibillion-dollar buildout of SI infrastructure across the United States. Wyoming officials have courted data centers with low energy costs and a business-friendly climate, though the projects have sparked debate over water use and grid strain.

Construction timelines and the facility's full specifications have not been disclosed. State regulators will review the utility agreements.

Once built, the data center would rank among Wyoming's largest electricity users. Cheyenne officials said the project will bring significant tax revenue and jobs, and the city is coordinating supporting infrastructure.
