Michelle Yeoh Named Asian Filmmaker of the Year at Busan; Ann Hui Receives Camellia Award

At the opening ceremony of the 31st Busan International Film Festival on October 6, Chinese-language cinema star Michelle Yeoh received the Asian Filmmaker of the Year Award, and Hong Kong director Ann Hui received the Camellia Award, which honors women filmmakers. Hong Kong's government news agency reported the honors the same day, with Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism Rosanna Law congratulating both.
According to Chinese-language media, the ceremony fell on Yeoh's 64th birthday. Returning to Busan after 15 years, she was given a special program screening four of her films, including her new feature "Miss Rubik's Cube," directed by Bai Xue and co-starring Liu Haoran, which screened in the festival's Gala Presentation section. On stage she thanked the audience in Korean and named directors Zhang Yimou and Ann Hui among those she wished to thank.
This year's Busan festival was the first to receive FIAPF "A-list" competitive accreditation, with Zhang Yimou chairing the jury. In 2023, Yeoh became the first Asian winner of the Academy Award for Best Actress, for "Everything Everywhere All at Once." (GSM, based on the Hong Kong government news release and public reports)
