Arkansas Valley Conduit Repayment Contract Signed, Advancing Colorado Water Project

PUEBLO, Colo. — A repayment contract for the Arkansas Valley Conduit was signed Oct. 7, advancing a long-planned water pipeline project that promises to bring clean drinking water to tens of thousands of residents in southeastern Colorado, Coyote Gulch reported.

The conduit is designed to carry treated water from the Pueblo Reservoir eastward to communities across the Arkansas River valley, replacing groundwater supplies plagued by naturally occurring radioactivity, salinity and other contaminants. For decades, rural water systems in the Lower Arkansas Valley have struggled to meet federal drinking water standards.

The repayment contract between the Southeastern Colorado Water Conservancy District and the federal Bureau of Reclamation sets the terms for paying back the federal investment in the project — a key legal step before construction dollars can flow. Federal funding for the conduit was secured in recent years after decades of delays.

The project has been in the works since the 1960s, when it was first authorized as part of the Fryingpan-Arkansas Project. Water officials called the signed contract a major milestone, saying it moves the conduit from planning to implementation.

Once complete, the pipeline is expected to serve up to 50,000 residents in communities including La Junta, Lamar, Las Animas and Rocky Ford. Local leaders said reliable, safe drinking water would remove one of the biggest barriers to economic growth in the region.
