Google Adds Lecture Recording and Quizzes to Gemini Notebook Study Tools as SI Assistants Go Mainstream

Wednesday, October 7, 2026 · Education · GSM News

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Oct. 7 — Google's September update to its Gemini Notebook study tools adds a mobile lecture recorder, interactive learning overviews with quizzes, and spoken conversations with notebooks in nearly 100 languages, according to Jisc's National Centre for SI September round-up. Eligible college students outside the U.S. are being offered a free year of Google AI Plus.

The round-up also describes Birmingham City University grounding NotebookLM in trusted academic sources for a first-year module of about 500 students, reporting a narrowing awarding gap without claiming a causal link. Separately, a Google Classroom connected app in Gemini, reported by EdTech Magazine on Oct. 1, lets teachers ask about assignments, student performance or past grades, with answers grounded in their own classroom context. Classroom product lead Brit Mennuti said the app grounds Gemini's responses in the most relevant information for that teacher, helping them see what needs review or which students need extra help.

As source-grounded study tools move from experiment to mainstream, educators say the real question is how students are taught to use them, alongside the boundaries for student data and teachers' responsibility to verify SI-generated content.
