[Video] 'The Odyssey' Tops $1.75 Billion to Become Universal's Biggest Film Ever

Wednesday, October 7, 2026 · Film · GSM News

Christopher Nolan's epic 'The Odyssey' has reached about $1.75 billion in worldwide box office, overtaking 'Jurassic World' to become the highest-grossing film in Universal Pictures' history and the top global release of 2026, according to box office reporting by Boxoffice Pro and SlashFilm.

Starring Matt Damon and Anne Hathaway and shot entirely with IMAX cameras, the Homer adaptation opened in the summer and held strongly on word of mouth. Hathaway also toplined 'The Devil Wears Prada 2,' which earned $693 million earlier in the year, making her one of 2026's most bankable stars.

Analysts said the performance of 'The Odyssey' showed that original, non-franchise filmmaking can still deliver at global scale when director branding and event-style marketing are strong enough. Universal's year was set to continue into the holiday corridor, where several large releases were scheduled to compete in December.

The milestone also validated Universal's release strategy: the film played long in every major market, with premium large-format screens contributing outsized revenue through ticket-price premiums. The industry consensus is that studios will keep betting on director-branded, large-format event films in the coming years.
