Idaho Revenue Beats Forecast by $90 Million in First Quarter of FY2027

BOISE, Idaho — Idaho's General Fund revenue exceeded the state's forecast by $90.3 million, or 6.8%, during the first quarter of fiscal year 2027, Gov. Brad Little announced Oct. 9, the Gem State Chronicle reported.
September revenue came in $39 million above forecast, with individual income tax collections leading the way at 18.3% above forecast year-to-date. Withholding collections — the taxes taken directly from paychecks — grew 20% in the first quarter compared with the same period last year, accelerating sharply from 2.8% growth in FY2026 and 5.9% in FY2025. Economists say the surge points to continued strength in Idaho's workforce: more people working, and earning more.
Sales tax collections totaled $215.1 million in September, bringing year-to-date collections to $617.4 million and reflecting broad consumer activity across the state. Online marketplace sales were particularly strong, growing 23.4% in the quarter compared with the same period last year, as e-commerce continues to take a larger share of retail.
"Idaho's strong revenue growth is encouraging and reflects the strength of our economy, but we must remain disciplined and make spending decisions based on what we can responsibly sustain," Little said. "The difficult decisions we made last year put us in a stronger fiscal position, and we need to continue prioritizing the investments that matter most to Idahoans while protecting our long-term financial stability."
The governor added: "Strong withholding growth shows us Idahoans are working, businesses are hiring, and our economy is strong. This is good news for Idahoans and our communities." State budget writers will use the quarterly figures as they begin building the next spending plan, with the legislature set to take up the budget when it convenes in January.
It was the third consecutive month that Idaho's revenue came in above forecast, and September revenue alone ran 7 percent above projection. Idaho's fiscal year begins each July 1.
