Term Agenda in Focus: Immigration Policies and State Assault-Style Rifle Bans Await the Justices

Wednesday, October 7, 2026 · Justice · GSM News

WASHINGTON, Oct. 7 — Beyond the Boulder climate case that opened the term, the Supreme Court's coming months already include disputes over President Trump's immigration policies and state-level bans on assault-style rifles, according to Reuters' review of the term's agenda. The court sits with a 6-3 conservative majority that has moved U.S. law rightward in recent years, and the term's direction is being closely watched.

The immigration docket turns on the boundaries of executive power: several of the administration's enforcement and asylum policies drew conflicting rulings in the lower courts, and Supreme Court action will set a single national rule. The gun docket is the continuing echo of the 2022 Bruen decision's history-and-tradition test, with circuits divided over rifle bans, magazine limits and firearm rights for particular categories of offenders. As GSM reported on Oct. 5, the court declined the Justice Department's appeal of the Fifth Circuit's as-applied felon-in-possession ruling, and similar challenges are expected to keep arriving.

Arguments are scheduled in monthly sittings from October through April, with decisions concentrated in May and June. Grants of certiorari are released after the justices' weekly conferences, making the Friday and Monday orders lists the tracking points for lawyers and the press.

For general readers, two practical points follow. First, once this term's immigration cases are decided, they will determine whether several enforcement policies stand nationwide, and affected families should rely on the opinion texts rather than social-media summaries. Second, rulings on state rifle bans will change which firearms residents may lawfully own in each state; travelers carrying firearms should check each state's current rules rather than assume uniformity.
