Minneapolis Streamlines Building Permits, Cutting Waits From Weeks to Days

Wednesday, October 7, 2026 · City · GSM News

MINNEAPOLIS — Minneapolis is a city in Hennepin County, Minnesota. The City of Minneapolis has sharply streamlined its residential building permit process. According to Finance & Commerce, via the Daily Reporter, permits for common projects such as porch and kitchen additions that once took two to three weeks are now being issued in about four days, while roof permits have dropped from roughly a week to a single day.

Erik Hansen, director of the city's Community Planning and Economic Development department (CPED), said the new "Express Limited Permit" track removes redundant review steps for lower-risk, standardized residential work. Minneapolis handles about 12,000 permits a year, a large share of them small home projects.

City officials said the faster turnaround is meant to encourage homeowners to pull proper permits, improve housing conditions and ease renovation delays. Contractors and residents can check the city website for eligible project types and required documents; complex projects still go through the full review process.

The city said the Express Limited Permit track covers project types with established standard plan sets; when paperwork is complete, review is simplified, but structural changes, historic properties and projects needing planning approval still follow the full process. Minneapolis has been digitizing city services for years — most permits can already be filed and paid for online — and the faster timelines are presented as the next step of that effort. Local contractors and homeowner groups have generally welcomed the change, saying shorter waits cut renovation costs and reduce unpermitted "build first, file later" work. The city said it will monitor processing data and adjust intake standards if backlogs or complaints rise, and residents unsure whether their project qualifies can call 311 first.
