Hurricane Warning Issued for Mississippi Gulf Coast as Isaias Approaches

GULFPORT, Miss. — A hurricane warning was in effect Oct. 7 for Mississippi's Gulf Coast as Tropical Storm Isaias threatened the region, putting emergency managers on high alert from Louisiana to the Florida Panhandle, the Clarion Ledger reported.

Forecasters warned of dangerous storm surge, heavy rainfall and hurricane-force winds along the coast. A hurricane warning means hurricane conditions are expected within the warning area, and residents were told to rush preparations to completion. Mississippi Emergency Management Agency officials urged coastal residents in Harrison, Hancock and Jackson counties to secure property, stock emergency supplies and follow evacuation guidance from local authorities.

The warning came as Isaias strengthened over the Gulf of Mexico, with landfall expected within days. Gulf Coast communities were still recovering from earlier storms this season, and officials said shelters were being readied and emergency crews placed on standby. The Mississippi National Guard was prepared to assist with evacuations and search-and-rescue operations if needed.

Businesses along the coast began boarding up windows, and casinos in Biloxi — a cornerstone of the local economy — announced closure plans ahead of the storm's arrival. Ports and harbors ordered vessels to seek safe harbor, and shrimpers raced to bring in boats before conditions deteriorated.

State officials reminded residents that storm surge is often the deadliest component of a Gulf hurricane, urging those in low-lying areas not to underestimate the water. Forecasters said rainfall totals could reach double digits in some areas, raising the risk of flash flooding well inland.
