STOWE, Vt. — A Vermont Roadside Historic Site Marker honoring the von Trapp family was unveiled Oct. 7 at the von Trapp Family Lodge & Resort in Stowe, cementing the family's place in the state's official historical landscape, the Burlington Free Press reported.

The dedication ceremony took place at 2 p.m. on Trapp Hill Road, overlooking the resort's Kaffeehaus Bakery, with members of the von Trapp family, U.S. Sen. Peter Welch, state and local officials, community leaders and members of the public invited to attend. The marker joins more than 200 roadside markers across Vermont.

Administered by the Vermont Division for Historic Preservation, the Roadside Historic Site Marker Program uses its signature green-and-gold markers to honor people, places and events that have played significant roles in the history of Vermont, the region and the nation. Nominations come from the public and are vetted by historians before approval.

The new marker recognizes not only the family whose story inspired "The Sound of Music" — one of the most beloved musicals in American culture — but also the life they built in Vermont. After leaving Austria following the German annexation in 1938, the Trapp family toured the United States as singers before settling in Stowe in 1942, drawn to a landscape that reminded them of their homeland.

They made the property they called Cor Unum — Latin for "one heart" — their permanent home in the United States, and the lodge they built there grew over the decades into one of Vermont's signature tourism landmarks, drawing visitors from around the world. Family members said the marker ensures that future generations of travelers will understand the real story behind the legend.
