Alabama Orders Mandatory Evacuations for Gulf Coast Ahead of Hurricane Isaias

Thursday, October 8, 2026 · States · GSM News

Gov. Kay Ivey on Thursday delivered a video address urging Alabamians to prepare for Hurricane Isaias, as 40 counties remained under a state of emergency declared Wednesday, her office and USA Today reported.

Ivey ordered mandatory evacuations for all tourists and non-residents south of the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway in Baldwin County — including Gulf Shores and Orange Beach — and for Dauphin Island in Mobile County, telling residents to "evacuate immediately." State offices in nine counties — Baldwin, Coffee, Covington, Dale, Escambia, Geneva, Henry, Houston and Mobile — closed at noon on October 9.

The governor warned of damaging winds, heavy rain and tornadoes as the storm approached the Gulf Coast. "Hope for the best. Prepare for the worst," Ivey said.

Isaias was expected to make landfall late October 9 into October 10 along the Mobile Bay to Pensacola line as a Category 1 hurricane with 85 mph winds, with storm surge of 5 to 7 feet forecast from the mouth of the Mississippi River to the Suwannee River.
