Austin Airport Braces for One of Its Busiest Departure Days Ever, With 40,000-Plus Travelers

Thursday, October 8, 2026 · City · GSM News

Austin is a city in Travis County, Texas. Austin-Bergstrom International Airport prepared for one of the busiest departure days in its history on Thursday, October 8, with officials projecting more than 40,000 departing passengers — a figure that would rank among the top 10 busiest departure days the airport has ever recorded.

The surge reflects a crowded Central Texas events calendar: the second weekend of the Austin City Limits Music Festival opens Friday at Zilker Park, joined by a Kacey Musgraves concert at Moody Center and Saturday's Red River Rivalry football game between Texas and Oklahoma in Dallas. October is typically one of the airport's busiest months, and Formula 1's arrival later this month is expected to bring another wave of travelers.

Travelers will also notice the airport's ongoing expansion. A new 30,000-square-foot atrium opened ahead of schedule for the first ACL weekend, adding queuing space for TSA security lines and baggage drop-off. Senior public information specialist Jim Reynolds said the improvements are designed to make travel more comfortable and safer, while keeping passengers out of the elements. Further construction continues under the airport's "Journey With AUS" expansion program.
