HUD's Operation Clean House Nets 491 Fugitives Hiding in Subsidized Housing Across 12 Cities

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) announced on October 8 (Release No. 26-083) that Operation Clean House — a joint effort by HUD's Office of Inspector General, the U.S. Marshals Service and partner agencies — arrested 491 fugitives who were allegedly hiding in HUD-assisted housing, in cases involving outstanding warrants and housing subsidy fraud.
The operation covered 12 cities nationwide, including Los Angeles. Officers targeted people with open arrest warrants who were living in public housing or using housing vouchers, as well as suspects in subsidy fraud.
HUD Secretary Scott Turner said assisted housing is a resource for law-abiding families and should not be a hiding place for fugitives. Acting Inspector General Brian D. Harrison and Scott Brady of the White House anti-fraud task force joined the announcement. HUD had earlier suspended some funding to the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority (LAHSA) in June, and in September announced fraud arrests in Los Angeles involving $14 million.
