Dual Ukrainian-Russian Citizen Pleads Guilty to Laundering Millions for Overseas Cyber Scammers

The U.S. Department of Justice announced on Oct. 8 that Oleg Korniev, 42, a dual Ukrainian-Russian citizen, has pleaded guilty to operating a worldwide money-laundering operation that moved money stolen from U.S. victims by overseas cybercriminals. According to the Justice Department, the overseas fraudsters first targeted victims in the United States and took their money, which was then moved through the laundering channels Korniev operated. Millions of dollars passed through the operation, making it a key conduit for overseas fraud rings to clean their proceeds and move them across borders. Korniev has entered his guilty plea, and sentencing proceedings are to be scheduled by the court. In recent years the Justice Department has kept up pressure on the money-laundering networks that provide money channels for online fraud, and intermediaries who move criminal proceeds have become an enforcement focus.
