Ambassador Kimberly Guilfoyle Scrutinized Over Texts Asking Donor to Pay $100K AmEx Bill

U.S. Ambassador to Greece Kimberly Guilfoyle is facing scrutiny over newly reported text messages in which she asked a Northern Kentucky attorney and major Republican donor to pay her $100,000 American Express bill, the Courier Journal reported, citing Wall Street Journal reporting from October 7-8.
According to the report, Guilfoyle texted Eric Deters on July 3, 2025 — before her Senate confirmation hearing — asking him to pay the card balance that day. Deters, who has sought Guilfoyle's help reaching Trump administration officials on tax and legal matters, including the extradition case of Dr. Abubakar Atiq Durrani, has also paid her $300,000 in speaking fees for his Freedom Fest events over the years.
Deters' attorney has questioned the authenticity of the text messages. Democrats have called for a State Department review of the matter. On October 8, Deters pushed back against the reporting in an MSNBC appearance, disputing the characterization of the exchanges.
Guilfoyle, a former Fox News host, was confirmed as ambassador to Greece in 2025.
