Louisiana Fire Marshal Debuts Pelly-Can the Pelican as New Fire-Safety Mascot

Thursday, October 8, 2026 · States · GSM News

The Louisiana Office of State Fire Marshal unveiled a new fire-safety mascot on October 8 in Baton Rouge: Pelly-Can, a pelican — the state bird — with the slogan "Making Fire Safety Soar in Louisiana," Louisiana First News reported.

The mascot launch anchors the office's community risk reduction campaign, which promotes smoke alarms, home escape plans, cooking safety, carbon monoxide awareness, generator safety, disaster preparedness and safety for older adults.

State Fire Marshal Chad P. Sonnier and DPS Chief of Staff Bryan J. Adams attended the unveiling. The office said it will provide fire departments across the state with educational materials featuring the new mascot for school visits and community events.

Officials said the pelican was chosen because it is instantly recognizable as Louisiana's state bird and appeals to children, the primary audience for fire-prevention education.
