North Carolina Reports First Flu Death of 2026-27 Season in Central NC Adult

North Carolina health officials on Thursday reported the first flu death of the 2026-27 influenza season, Reuters reported on October 8.
The state Department of Health and Human Services said an adult in central North Carolina died from flu complications during the first week of October. No further details were released to protect the family's privacy.
"This is a heartbreaking reminder that flu can be a serious illness," said Dr. Dev Sangvai, the department's secretary.
Last season was one of the deadliest in recent memory: 335 North Carolinians died of flu, including 10 children — the third-highest toll since widespread reporting began in 2009. Health officials urge everyone 6 months and older to get a flu vaccine each year and to consider COVID-19 and RSV vaccines as well.
