Storm Surge Warning Issued for New Orleans Area as Hurricane Isaias Nears the Gulf Coast

Thursday, October 8, 2026 · City · GSM News

New Orleans is a city in Orleans Parish, Louisiana. The National Weather Service office in New Orleans issued a Storm Surge Warning and a Tropical Storm Warning at 9:59 p.m. CDT on October 7 as Hurricane Isaias churned toward the U.S. Gulf Coast, urging residents to complete preparations immediately.

A storm surge warning means life-threatening inundation is possible within 36 hours. Forecasters said surge waters could reach 3 to 5 feet above ground level somewhere within the warning area, with the window of concern running from Friday morning into Saturday morning. Tropical storm-force winds of 20 to 30 mph with gusts to 45 mph were also expected, with the wind threat at times reaching the equivalent of 39 to 57 mph — enough to snap large tree limbs, damage porches and unanchored mobile homes, scatter debris across roads and cause scattered power and communications outages. The warning covers communities around Lake Catherine and other waters east of New Orleans.

Isaias had strengthened into a Category 2 hurricane, with storm surge, flooding and high wind alerts spanning more than 600 miles of coastline from southeastern Louisiana to the Florida coast south of Tallahassee. Alabama declared a state of emergency for 40 counties, and Florida officials warned that 5 to 7 feet of surge in low-lying areas would be unsurvivable, pressing residents to evacuate.

The warning area also includes Venetian Isles and other low-lying coastal communities in eastern New Orleans.
