Treasury's "Operation Economic Outcast" Sanctions Iran's Petroleum Shadow Fleet

Thursday, October 8, 2026 · Federal · GSM News

The U.S. Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) announced on Oct. 8 that, under an action named "Operation Economic Outcast," it has sanctioned an Iranian petroleum shadow-fleet network, including vessels and front entities used as cover. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is the senior official named in the announcement. The sanctions were imposed under Executive Order 13902 and aim to further cut off the clandestine shipping network on which Iran's petroleum exports depend. Treasury said the action builds on an Aug. 24, 2026 announcement. The so-called shadow fleet — tankers Iran uses to evade sanctions — has been targeted by U.S. designations repeatedly in recent years. (From the U.S. Treasury announcement.)
