Libertarian Candidates Find Body in Maumee River While Filming Campaign Video in Toledo

Thursday, October 8, 2026 · States · GSM News

Two Libertarian candidates for Ohio statewide office stumbled upon a body in the Maumee River on Thursday morning while filming a campaign video in Toledo, USA Today reported.

Don Kissick, the Libertarian candidate for governor, and Tom Pruss, the party's candidate for secretary of state, were shooting video in a downtown Toledo park across from the riverfront when a teenager approached and told them he had seen something in the water. The candidates walked to the river with the teen and found the body floating in the Maumee River.

Pruss called 911 and stayed with the teenager, waiting for police and the boy's parents to arrive. Authorities said the deceased appeared to be a man in his late 20s or early 30s. The identity had not been confirmed and the death was under investigation.

Kissick later said the experience was sobering and offered condolences to the family, noting that the campaign's plans for the day gave way to something far more serious.
