Prosecutors Answer Murdaugh Defense's 'Hidden Evidence' Claims Ahead of Retrial Hearing

Thursday, October 8, 2026 · States · GSM News

South Carolina prosecutors on October 8 filed a motion responding to Alex Murdaugh's defense team's claim that the state hid evidence, beating a noon deadline set by the judge in his retrial case, the Greenville News reported.

In the filing, the Attorney General's office dismissed one of the defense's requests as a "fishing expedition" and pushed back on allegations that investigators concealed material. The defense is seeking independent DNA retesting — a non-family male DNA profile was found on Maggie Murdaugh's hand and phone, analyzed by Othram Inc. — as well as original files from cellphone forensics, which the state called "false" and "manufactured" claims.

The defense has also raised allegations involving Yemassee Police Chief Greg Alexander over the alleged destruction of a weapon, which the state said it could "neither confirm nor deny" in relation to a grand jury investigation.

A hearing on the motions is set for October 16, and the retrial is tentatively scheduled for the week of April 5, 2027.
