Seattle City Attorney's Office Creates Two Prosecutor Posts for Gun Violence and Sex Trafficking Cases

Seattle is a city in King County, Washington. The Seattle City Attorney's office is hiring two new prosecutors, City Attorney Erika Evans announced in a report published October 8. Evans created the positions to work with King County to prosecute crimes associated with gun violence and sex trafficking.
Under Washington's system, the Seattle City Attorney's office handles misdemeanor cases within the city, while felony cases fall to the King County Prosecuting Attorney's office. Gun-violence and sex-trafficking cases frequently straddle that line — conduct such as unlawful gun possession or threats can begin at the city level, while trafficking networks and serious shootings are prosecuted by the county. The two new posts are designed to coordinate cases across the two offices so prosecutions do not stall at the handoff between jurisdictions.
The move adds dedicated staffing to two areas that have drawn sustained attention from city leaders and community groups in Seattle and King County. The prosecutors are expected to work alongside county prosecutors, police and victim-service organizations. Hiring for the positions is under way.
