Encinitas Teacher Katie Andan Named California Teacher of the Year; Classroom Project Led to Inclusive Playground Law
Encinitas is a city in San Diego County, California. Katie Andan, a fifth-grade teacher at La Costa Heights Elementary School in Encinitas, has been named one of the five 2027 California Teachers of the Year. She has guided her students in researching local issues and presenting their findings to state lawmakers; one class project, prompted by concern that students in the special education program could not fully use their playground, led to the Inclusive Playground Act, AB 2241, which was signed into law in September. She will represent California in the competition for National Teacher of the Year.
