Hawthorne Pauses New Data Centers for 45 Days to Study Environmental and Infrastructure Impacts

Hawthorne is a city in Los Angeles County, California. The Hawthorne City Council has adopted an interim urgency ordinance pausing new and expanded data centers citywide while staff studies their environmental and infrastructure impacts. The city is home to SpaceX's rocket production and is an aerospace and air-mobility hub. The city attorney described the ordinance as compliant with state law; it runs for an initial 45 days, through about October 24, and may be extended. The planning director said the impacts on community resources must be thoroughly evaluated. The city did not say whether a specific project prompted the pause.
