DOJ Seeks $280M From Importer Uni-Tile & Marble in Customs Fraud Suit

The Justice Department's Civil Division has filed a civil fraud suit in the U.S. Court of International Trade against importer Uni-Tile & Marble Inc. The federal government is seeking more than $280 million in the case, covering allegedly unpaid customs duties and fraud penalties. The suit was announced by the Justice Department on Oct. 7. Prosecutors allege the importer engaged in fraud in the import process, costing the government customs revenue, and are pursuing both the duties owed and penalties through the civil action. The case reflects stepped-up federal enforcement against customs fraud, and was listed in the day's civil enforcement update. The case will be heard by the U.S. Court of International Trade. The Justice Department notes that the claims in a civil complaint remain allegations until the court rules. (From the DOJ announcement.)
