Metro Proposes 11.1% Fare Hike, Free Rides for Kids 5-18 in FY2028 Plan

Metro's board on October 8 discussed a proposed 11.1% fare increase for fiscal 2028 that would raise base fares from $2.25–$6.75 to $2.50–$7.50, generating an estimated $40–45 million in additional revenue, Fox 5 DC reported.
The proposal also includes free Metro rail and bus rides for D.C., Maryland and Virginia residents ages 5 to 18 — projected to cost $7 million net while adding 900,000 trips. Other elements include modernizing the payment system, eliminating cash fares on buses, and authorizing non-MTPD personnel to issue fare-evasion citations.
The board discussed the package on October 8. The general manager's budget proposal is due in December, followed by public hearings this winter and a final vote in spring 2027.
