DC Announces Modified City Services for Indigenous Peoples' Day on October 12

Thursday, October 8, 2026 · City · GSM News

WASHINGTON — The District of Columbia government on October 8 announced modified city services for the Indigenous Peoples' Day holiday on Monday, October 12. According to the mayor's office notice (mayor.dc.gov), most District government offices will be closed or operate on reduced schedules for the holiday, and residents were urged to plan ahead as routine services pause or shift.

Under the District's usual holiday practice, trash and recycling collection typically slides by one day, street sweeping and some parking enforcement are suspended, and public schools and libraries follow holiday schedules; transit generally runs on a Saturday or holiday timetable. The notice itemized arrangements by agency, including hours for pools, parks and recreation centers.

Officials advised residents to check the official announcement or call the 311 city services line before traveling or visiting government offices. All services resume normal schedules on October 13. Indigenous Peoples' Day is an official public holiday in the District, and the city publishes its service adjustments in advance each year.

The mayor's office pointed residents to the holiday-services page on dc.gov for agency-by-agency details; the broad strokes — collection sliding a day, parking enforcement paused — are similar each year, but pool and recreation-center hours vary, making a quick check worthwhile. The District observes the October holiday as Indigenous Peoples' Day, with government offices and public schools on holiday schedules; federal agencies are also closed, so downtown commuting drops sharply and Metro and buses run holiday timetables with wider gaps between trains and buses. The city said the 311 line operates through the holiday and emergency services are unaffected, and that missed collections can be reported on the next business day.
